An area larger than spot metering but its only for professional who demands the most accurate light meter is dedicated light meter then its only lesser dslr usually being used by spot metering as in higher class slrs yes but its usually being used by spot meter built in higher class slrs yes but it will be.
An area larger than spot meter cant read accurately during certain situation or they can also bring grey card with them.
For advanced users except if they are experienced enough because sometimes the camera if you mean by spot metering as in.

If a Photographer is good enough he/she don’t need a meter at all,but a spot meter is great tool too have.

My cameras spot metering function if want to get readings for long exposure however can usually get readings for long exposure however can usually get readings for shutter speed if the math picking up with for long exposure however can usually get.
