I recently bought some photography equipment and would like to better understand how to take good pictures?

lookingforanswers asked:

I have a 35mm SLR and bought a wide angle lens, a telephoto lens (both with hoods), a polarizer and slide film. I want to know what I should be aware of when using the hood, the polarizer and whether this equipment is more conducive to a specific type of photography (nature vs portrait). I am traveling in two weeks and want to take great photos.
