What additional requirements do I need to look for in a computer to support digital photography?

I’ve recently renewed my interest in photography and have gotten a digital slr. I know my old computer is not sufficient to continuously support the downloads of pictures and the programs for editing. Any help on what I need to look for would be appreciated
