any base model dslr, if you can handle used get a used canon 20d 30d or nikon d100 or d200 perhaps

If they require a digital camera, you may want to ask THEM what they require. Most beginning photo classes require a $150 35 mm SLR with standard zoom lens and it is used for about the first two to three semesters to teach you the fundamentals of photography and how to be a disciplined shooter.
I can only guess that if a digital camera is required for your classes you will be required to have some kind of dSLR. Figure on spending from $550 to $1,200 for such a camera, depending upon your wants and needs.
