I would suggest a Nikon D90. Fairly inexpensive for the features. Has everything you will want to get started and learn the menu and features before upgrading to a D3 or similar. Nikon vs. Canon is more of a preference thing, I prefer Nikon because the menu is easier for me to use.

      Well what is your budget?

      I can suggest a Nikon D3000 for $550:

The answers above are good ones, but when you say, “going to school with”, do you mean to take to school with you for taking photos of your friends and other subjects or do you mean to use to learn photography?

Most schools start student out using some kind of a film camera to instill the fundamentals of photography and discipline the student, so they eventually can take photos with near perfect exposure every time they press the shutter release.

If you are looking for a film camera for school a Pentax k1000 is great. Its manual and super durable!

And they aren’t pricey, heres a great deal on ebay. You get the camera and 3 lens
