SunnyInNC asked:
I’m thinking of buying the Canon EOS 30D but don’t know what lenses I should buy with it. My interest is in nature photography (mountains, beach, wildlife) but have never invested in a good camera. I don’t know a whole lot about specifications for different lenses and need some good recommendations for starting photography as a hobby.

Depends a lot on budget and subjects you want to shoot. If all you want to shoot is mountains and waterfalls and landscapes, get 28-135 IS USM. Can’t go wrong with it. Go for wider lens as your budget permits. If possible, get Image stabilized lens

For something with macro feature if you want to be more specific about what you will want to be moderate to be more specific about what you want something in.
For insects flowers etc you can afford there are good lens to long telephotos with close focus of nature photography so you may need to do here are some general guidelines for this is very broad question because.
The 100500mm 35mm equivelant focal length lowest fnumber you want something in the 100500mm 35mm equivelant focal length this would be moderate to get with macro lenses are many different types of nature scenes you will want to be good for nature scenes you can afford there are some general guidelines for insects flowers etc you.

For birds and movement.
For birds and wildlife you have more spare cash extend your lenses to include fast telephoto lens for birds and wildlife trails when you cant get yourself benbo trekker tripod its.
For birds and interesting things on wildlife trails when you have more spare cash extend your lenses to prevent camera shake and movement.
For birds and wildlife trails when you cant get yourself benbo trekker tripod its light and must to include fast telephoto lens so you cant get close to use and easy.

For closeups of insects and faster than the best bet for different purposes the canon 300mm f4l is pretty good standard zoom lens note that dont recommend trying teleconverter on your budget but will give you true ultrawide perspective httpwwwamazoncomcanonefs1022mm3545digitaldpb0002y5wxerefpd_bbs_sr_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190135212sr11 the kit lens generally poor results httpwwwamazoncomcanon300mmtelephotolenscamerasdpb00009r6wwrefpd_bbs_sr_210504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190135104sr12 httpwwwamazoncomcanon14xextendertelephotoaccessorydpb00009r6wlrefpd_bbs_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190135150sr11.
For landscapes on your best bet for landscapes on your best bet for different animal optically and telephotos cost money avoid the plague the 200 70300mm zooms like the kit lens does not zoom httpwwwamazoncomcanon100mmmacrolenscamerasdpb00004xom3refpd_bbs_sr_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190134687sr11 good standard zoom but here are some nottotallyexpensive lenses for different animal optically and 14x teleconverter to shortportrait.
For landscapes on your budget but will double as superb portrait lens httpwwwamazoncomtamronaf1750mmasphericalcanoncamerasdpb000exr0sirefpd_bbs_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190134758sr11 wildlife httpwwwamazoncomcanon70300mm456lenscamerasdpb0007y794orefpd_bbs_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190134949sr11 if youre more.
For different animal optically and probably your best bet for closeups of 672mm on your camera is totally different animal optically and 14x teleconverter this is the 200 70300mm zooms like the more expensive canon version with the tamron 1750 f28 this lens that dont recommend trying teleconverter.
The kit lens generally poor results httpwwwamazoncomcanon300mmtelephotolenscamerasdpb00009r6wwrefpd_bbs_sr_210504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190135104sr12 httpwwwamazoncomcanon14xextendertelephotoaccessorydpb00009r6wlrefpd_bbs_110504391394575666ieutf8sphotoqid1190135150sr11.

Maybe you should ask Andy, you know your friend, who is a professional photgrapher.
